“I have always been bothered by the idea of just trying to design another pretty chair. I’m more interested in designing experiences than creating styles, and I will continue to fold these stories into whatever forms I can.”
Sami Hayek is a Mexican-born, L.A.-based designer whose work includes environmental and furniture design projects, among others. His multi-disciplinary practice engages in a diverse array of design projects at various scales, from luxury furniture and affordable products to residential and commercial design. In the luxury realm, he has designed projects for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Poltrona Frau and Bentley, for whom he designed a concept aircraft. Versatile and creative, he has designed commercial and residential interiors and buildings, including a 120-unit middle-income housing project that he both developed and designed in Tijuana, Mexico. In 2008, Hayek designed an extensive limited-edition collection for Target that included furniture, bedding and accessories.
Hayek’s design philosophy is based on an ongoing dialogue of powerful thoughts and moments in time translated into colors, textures, forms and compositions. Born in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico to a multi-cultural family, Hayek was exposed early on to a rich expression of colors and the vibrant energy found in the local markets, streets and people. While growing up, he was also strongly influenced by the Spanish and Lebanese culture of his parents. This diversity and richness continues to have a significant impact on his work. He has a particular appreciation for the craftsmanship and authenticity of traditional workmanship but brings a contemporary sensibility to his designs.
In 2011, Hayek launched Espacio Sami Hayek, a multi-channel collection of home furnishings, accessories and design solutions, in collaboration with Springs Global, the world’s leader in innovative branding, design, marketing, and development of decorative home furnishings. Sami Hayek currently serves as Executive Creative Director and Principal Designer of Espacio Sami Hayek.
Sami Hayek’s work has been included in numerous international gallery exhibitions and has been widely published. He has served as a guest critic and lecturer at UCLA, New York University, University of Southern California, Penn State, SCI-Arc and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. He currently teaches at Art Center College of Design, and is a Member of the Design Review Committee for the revitalization of the city of Hollywood, California. Charismatic and personable, Sami is no stranger to the limelight, having designed for many A-list celebrities including his sister, Salma.
